Nitriding technology


 

Nitriding is a thermo-chemical treatment for the enrichment of the edge zone of a work-piece with nitrogen. In nitro-carburising, the edge zone is also enriched with carbon.

The purpose of this treatment is to improve the performance characteristics of the tools, particularly wear behaviour, strength under both static and dynamic loading, and corrosion behaviour.

An improvement of wear properties is achieved by the formation of a nitrided layer which normally consists of the compound layer and diffusion layer sub-layers.

The compound layer is the outer nitride layer and consists of various iron nitrides. Depending on the process and the material, compound layer thicknesses of up to 20 µm can be achieved. The diffusion layer adjoins the compound layer. Part of the nitrogen is embedded in the interstices and a further part is deposited in the form of nitrides in the base material and on the grain boundaries. Depending on the process and the material, nitride depths of 0.05 – 0.5mm can be achieved. Greater depths require increasing the process duration many times over.

The usual process temperatures for nitriding and carbo-nitriding are between 500 und 550°C. The process duration varies between a few minutes and several days depending on the material and the required depth. Because of the low process temperatures, changes in the microstructure and therefore changes of dimensions and shape such as those that occur in case-hardening are avoided. In practice, both plasma and gas nitriding are used. Nitro-carburising can also be carried out in solid (powder carbo-nitriding) or liquid media (salt bath nitriding).
